Appearance
Age: 51
Gender: male.
Height: 5’10″
Build: Once very fit, Ted now runs to hard fat: he won’t be running any races for fun, but if you slammed a door in his face, he’d punch through it. He looks like a middle-aged heavy weight boxer, who developed love of twinkies and Western clothes.
Hair: Salt and pepper, short, hides his bald spot under his hat. Sometimes grows a short beard, sometimes prefers to be clean-shaven.
Eyes: Brown.
Skin: Pale. Despite cowboy clothes, Ted hasn’t seen a ranch for years and years.
Favorite mode of fighting
Ted prefers a large heavy mace but is also fond of modified guns, especially revolvers.
Affiliation
Atlanta Chapter of the Order of Merciful Aid, Knight-Protector. As Knight-Protector, Ted oversees the activity of the Atlanta Order office.
Specialty
Seems to always know more than people expect he does. Demands exceptional results in unreasonable time and when his subordinates deliver, he takes it as a given. Dislikes any deviation from the human norm. Ted is very stubborn and has been known to dig his heels when it suits him.
Ted = hardass
Thanks for the bio, this sounds like my boss. Kate and Andrea better watch out, cause he sounds like he’s always watching 0_0
(insert awkward silence here)
“Ted prefers a large heavy mace but is also found of modified guns, especially revolvers.”
Don’t shoot the messenger with one of Ted’s modified guns but I believe the word you meant to use in the sentence above is fond, not found.
Unless Ted likes to find modified guns. And really, who doesn’t enjoy the thrill of discovering a modified revolver?
Oh, good catch!
I’ll bet Ted is a whiz with that Mace! Now I need to get the books out and read them again since I have a face:)
I love a good mace myself.
I noticed that Ted had a name change. In Magic Bites it was Monahan and now it’s Moynahan
Ted equals LAMENESS!!! Ugh hate that guy. I hope kate ends up stabbing him or something as equally satisfying.
Oh I wanted to punch him in the face so much while reading book four!
Question – After the battle at the end of Magic Bleeds- it appeared that the sum of the people near the showdown were nuked. But I wasn’t clear if Ted was one of them so my question, is Ted dead?
I wondered the same thing, and although it probably says something bad about me, I hope he got crisped.
I personally believe that with all his hatred towards human hybrids that he is either a closeted shapeshifter, opperating outside of the pack, or has (had) a family member affiliated with the shapeshifters and has either lost contact or has since died. Maybe a wife or a child.
I really wish he gets fired of the Order in each book. I´ll keep wishing ´till the end of the series. If he doesn´t die or gets lost by then I´ll have to write a fanfic based on his destruction just to calm myself. He´s a total jerk. I really can´t see a single good quality on him, that is pretty sad.
Please, if it doesn’t happen in the book, seriously, DO IT! then e-mail it to me. please!!
i bet he is in cahoots with Roland!!! or the light house. ether way i bet he is a bad bad man.
I hate the guy.I hope Kate beats his ass black and blue. He’s so biased, the jerk.I wanna punch him soo much right now!
You two are such amazing writers! To hear such negativity against a fictional character…
Its all so easy to fall in love with the protagonists, but to be able to create such hatred for a side character! Roland is great as a ‘bad guy’,.. but Ted is a close second. I really consider this one of my favorite series along with Mercy Thompson and Miles Vorkosigan. Keep up the great job!
I actually think Ted is a great character. I don’t understand why he could be considered a bad guy. Ted is as fierce about humankind as Jim and Curran are about shapeshifters; as witches are about their coven, as the warlocks are about their cabal, as the People are about necromancers, and so on. The Lighthouse Keepers, yep, they’re bad guys. They want to destroy those unlike them. Ted just wants a world that’s safe for his own kind–he’s not /starting/leading wars against non-humans. There are no supernaturals without a central protector in Kate’s world. Why shouldn’t humans have a central protector? Now if it turns out Ted had any shady dealings with the Lighthouse Keepers, that would be different. Until then I think of Ted as fighting for the future of his own kind–no different than Curran and just as unapologetic about it.
But Ted IS a bad guy- in Bleeds when he asks Kate “what is the purpose of the Order?” Kate answers to protect humans. When Kate asks if his preference was camps for shifters he said that since they posed a danger to humans, they should be eradicated. He only supports HUMANS, despite all the magically talented people in the Order. But then, magic users are still human, they don’t have a furry side. No word yet on his feelings regarding the People, though I can’t imagine him supportive of vampires.
There are shifters who have no use for humans. Warlocks with no use for any other being but other warlocks, and so on. They each serve a purpose in the Kate Daniels world, but that doesn’t define the whole of their character. Each race of beings would probably rather deal only with its own kind. Why shouldn’t Ted? As long as he’s not leading a charge or conspiring to carry out his personal agenda (eliminating non-humans), I still think he’s a good guy for humans. Similarly to how Curran is a good guy for shifters.
With all the supernatural elements that prey on the vulnerabilities of humans in this world, why shouldn’t Ted be the human’s good guy? Can humans defend themselves or mount retribution against supernaturals that stand against them or their interests? No (see book #5). Does Ted seek to right the wrongs perpetuated against humans by these supernatural beings? Yes (see book #4). It’s a very simple equation to me.
Does Ted pursue the best interest of non-humans? No. Does Curran pursue the best interest of non-humans? Yes and no. If the non-human is a shifter, yes. If the non-human is other, no (not to imply that Curran looks out for the best interest of humans). Why would Ted be the bad guy and Curran not? Just because Kate sees Ted as such doesn’t mean it’s so. As a not-quite human, of course her interests would oppose Ted’s with respect to non-humans. But they also align with Ted’s with respect to humans. One of Kate’s best friends, Jim, epitomizes this extreme prejudice in his favor of shifters. He and Ted are just different sides of the same coin. Kate’s personal relationship with each of these men only define Kate’s feelings about who is good or who is bad. So what if Ted doesn’t want to be friends with Kate? He doesn’t have to be her friend, he just has to get results for those he represents (can someone say Curran?).
What makes Kate so unique is her need to toe the line between all people, because she–in essence–is all people in this new world. Who but Kate is really poised to dispense justice in this modern Atlanta? Thankfully, she is able to put aside all her personal biases (unlike Ted, Curran, Jim, et. al.) and just do the job that needs doing whoever it needs to be done for.
To me there really are no good or bad guys. There are just the defenseless and the defenders.
