One can expect the world after the magic apocalypse has similarly minded grifters. But in a world where magic sometimes works, a cult leader would be expected to produce results, and not just those available by stage magic. Disillusioned followers have been known to get testy, so it would seem that exposed fakes could be separated into the classical pairing of the quick or the dead.
